Covid-19 vaccination campaign resurfaces
Health authorities have embarked on a Covid19 vaccination campaign targeting all individuals above 18 years eligible to get booster doses.
The exercise which runs between the 18th and the 23rd of this month will be administered in all government and Christian Health Association of Malawi (CHAM) facilities including other designated temporary vaccination cites.
Statistics from the ministry of health shows that the number of recorded Covid-19 cases, admissions and deaths have remained very low since the second half of 2023.
In a statement that www.capitalradiomalawi.com has seen, secretary for health, Samson Mndolo said that the circulation of Coronavirus in many countries across the world can still cause outbreaks among those without adequate protective immunity.
Mndolo explained that the COVID-19 vaccination coverage for the country was less than recommended even for those that have been vaccinated before. He added that the level of protective immunity begins to decline after six to twelve months from the last dose.
“For these reasons, the ministry of health encourages all inhabitants to continue being vigilant and continue to access Covid-19 preventive interventions as necessary to ensure that Covid-19 does not come back” he added.
According to Mndolo, this is in line with the recommendation from WHO to manage the disease after it was declared as no longer a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.
During the week, the ministry will be administering Johnson and Johnson which is given as a single dose only.
Mdolo has since called upon all partners in the health sector and beyond, to support this exercise through provision of material and other supplies and commodities, to make it a resounding success.
