Chawinga sisters nominated in Malawi Sport Awards

Tabitha Chawinga & her sister Temwa nominated as best Sports Women in the 2023 Malawi Sport Awards.

Tabitha who is currently playing for PSG in France, she was among others named in International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) CAF Women Team of the Year 2023, won the Serie A Femminile’s Golden Boot in Italy with an outstanding 23 goals in the 2022/23 league season, was nominated for the 2023 CAF Women Player of the Year award, named in best Africa XI by FIFPRO Africa alongside 2023 African Player of Year Asisat Oshoala of Nigeria.

On the other hand, her sister Temwa, has had many achievements including being named women’s top scorer in the world in 2023 with 63 goals by the International Federation of Football History, she came third on the ranking of Women’s World Best Top Division Goal Scorer 2023 — identified after bagging 30 goals in China’s Super League playing for Wuhan, was nominated for the 2023 CAF Player of the Year Award as well as leading Malawi Scorchers to win the 2023 COSAFA Women’s Championship where she won Player of the Tournament, Golden Boot and two Player of the Match accolades.

At Friday’s awards gala night in Lilongwe, the two Malawi Football exports will face a Doughts player Susan Mkachepa who is the current African Champion in draughts64 which she won at the African Women Championship in Zambia last year,  she became the first and only African Female to attain a prestigious title Called International Female Master in draughts64, she is the only Athlete that brought home from an international event 5 Gold,1 silver, and 1 Bronze medal from one continental sports event and she is currently an undisputed National Champion since 2020 with an undefeated record.

Meanwhile, Malawi National Council of Sports board member and chairperson of the sports and development committee Hellen Tasosa says: “All we have done is just to make sure that the names have been identified and we are now handing them (names) over to the auditors who will do the final listing.”

In other categories, Malawi Scorchers, Draughts and Special Olympics have been nominated as National Teams of the Year.

In the Best Sports district of the year there is Karonga, Salima and Chitipa as Mibawa TV, Times Group and Timveni Radio will be competing in the Best Media category.

In the non-citizen of the year category, FCB Nyasa Big Bullets mentor Kalisto Pasuwa has been nominated along with Arjun Menon who runs a cricket academy and a 17-year-old Chess player Priyasha Santosh Shyrian.

There are 16 categories in total with each having 3 nominees where one person will win in each category.
