Mpoto Awards to honor exceptional achievers from the North

Individuals and groups making significant contributions to the northern region are set to be honored and recognized at the upcoming Mpoto Awards ceremony, scheduled for this Friday at the Grand Place Hotel in Mzuzu.

Previously named the Mzuzu Music Awards, this event serves as a platform for recognizing outstanding talents and initiatives, serving as inspiration for others to strive for excellence and contribute to regional development.

Founded to recognize the noteworthy contributions of individuals and groups to the northern region, these awards are poised to become an annual focal point, cultivating a sense of pride and inspiration within the community.

Speaking to Capital FM, Burnett Mulungu, the Events Coordinator, affirmed that all necessary preparations for the ceremony are complete.

He shared, “We have secured all the necessary logistical items that were on the list, and everything is in place.”

Mulungu added; “The guest of honor, Mzuzu University Vice-Chancellor Professor Wales Singini has confirmed his availability, we have performers lined up and I would say that we are ready to host this year’s edition of the Awards.”

Initially, conceived as a celebration of excellence in music, this year’s event has evolved to encompass a broader range of achievements, prompting a name change to reflect its expanded scope.

“This year around it is a bit different from last year. Last year we only targeted excellence in music but this year we are covering diverse disciplines.” Mulungu said.

“There are five disciplines and we have 19 medals that we are giving out. These disciplines are excellence in music, visual arts and design, creative writing and poetry, sports, and innovation and entrepreneurship,” he said.

In addition to honoring 19 individuals and groups, renowned musician Billy Kaunda will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his significant contributions to the Malawian Music industry.

This prestigious credit follows in the footsteps of the late Wambali Mkandawire, who received the inaugural award.

Furthermore, Hip-Hop artist Nthondwa will be honored with the Honorary Hip-Hop & Culture Achievement Award for his outstanding dedication to the world of Hip-Hop and Culture.
