Zomba woman arrested for destroying bank notes
Police in Zomba have arrested a 38-year-old woman for allegedly destroying bank notes.
Sara Phiri is reported to have acted in anger by shredding several notes following a failed business transaction.
“The suspect agreed to buy a bed at K45,000 from Miss Mercy Lawrence, and she gave her K25,000 as a deposit. A few days later, the seller changed her decision and decided not to sell the bed anymore,” assistant public relations officer for Zomba police Sonia Chipao explains.
Despite being promised a refund, the suspect was not pleased and demanded that she be given back K50,000 as consolation for wasted time.
“The seller refused the demand and gave back the amount she received as deposit,” Chipao adds.
This angered Phiri who refused to accept the refund and instead tore the notes into tiny pieces.
The matter was reported to Zomba police station who conducted an investigation and later made an arrest.
Phiri is expected to appear in court where she will answer a charge of tampering with the Malawi currency.
