5 present nomination papers for Mtiya polls
Five candidates have presented nomination papers for the September 26 by-elections in Zomba City Constituency’s Mtiya Ward area.
According to director of media and communications at the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Sangwani Mwafulirwa, the candidates include two women and three men.
“The candidates are representing the Umodzi party, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), United Democratic Front (UDF), Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and UTM,” revealed Mwafulirwa.
The Commission is expected to scrutinise the nominations against the criteria provided before announcing the confirmed candidates.
Mwafulirwa describes the inclusion of female candidates as a plus and further called on more women to participate in future elections.
“In the previous two year by-elections that we have had, we did not have a representation of female candidates. There is need for political parties to encourage or create an environment that will enable women take up decision making positions,” he added.
The official campaign period for the Mtiya Ward by-election started on July 27th and will end on September 24 at 6am.
