NWRA engage authorities on water resources management
The National Water Resources Authority (NWRA) has embarked on interventions aimed at ensuring sanity in the water resources management sector in the country.
The authority is briefing Malawi’s 35 Councils on mandate and functions respectively.
Speaking on the side-lines of District Executive Committee meeting in Nsanje, senior civic education officer and spokesperson for the NWRA Masozi Kasambala observed that councils are very key in the provision of water resources in the country.
He said; “councils must make sure that they are not engaging in business with illegal borehole driller and contractors.”
However, Kasambara has expressed worry over appalling situation on illegal borehole drilling in Malawi.
“The situation regarding illegal borehole drilling and trading in the country is not as we would have wanted it to be. We have invigorated our civic education drive to ensure people are not fined for not complying with existing laws and regulations in the water sector,” said Kasambala.
He added that; “the National Water Resources Authority has issued a 90 day ultimatum that all individuals and institutions with illegal water supply must register with the authority so that they should be regularised.”
Meanwhile, District Water Development Officer for Nsanje Chembekezo Heremah says the Council will sensitise all relevant structures in the district so that they comply with laws regulating the sector.
