2 fined over illegal fuel possession in Nsanje

The First Grade Magistrate Court in Nsanje has ordered Bashir Mahomed and Amad Selemani to pay a K400,000 fine each or in default serve 18 month jail for being found with fuel without license.

On Tuesday, the two pleaded guilty to two counts levelled against them leading to their subsequent conviction.

Presiding Magistrate Watson Mankhanamba has since ordered that 1, 000 litres of fuel which the two were illegally possessing be forfeited and donated to State institutions such as hospitals, police, army, prison and Nsanje District Council.

He further ordered Amad Selemani, owner of the vehicle that was used to transport the illicit fuel to pay a K200,000 fine saying the court has been lenient on him for being a first offender.

The duo were nabbed Sunday night following an ambush by police who acted on a tip.

The two who hails from the area of chief Ndamera sourced the 1, 000 litres of fuel from Tengani Energem Service Station in the district.
