NMB injects K7m to MZUNI Vice Chancellor’s Trophy

National Bank of Malawi (NBM ) plc has handed over K7 million to Mzuzu University (MZUNI) for sponsorship of the Inter-Faculty Vice Chancellor’s Trophy.

After a 5-year break due to financial resources, the trophy is back this year and students from the University’s six Faculties will participate in the competition expected to take place from 16 to 24 September.

The six Faculties include Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Social Sciences, Health Sciences, Hospitality and Tourism as well as Environment Sciences.

They will compete in ten different sports categories including Football, Netball, Basketball, Volleyball, Hockey, Pool, Chess, Weightlifting, Bodybuilding and Athletics.

Speaking during a symbolic cheque presentation on Friday, NBM plc Mzuzu service centre manager Sam Mzungu said they are supporting the competition as it echoes well with the areas of contributions towards development.

“We have partnered with Mzuzu University for this vice chancellor’s trophy and we feel that resonates well with the areas of contributions towards development. Education is one of the key pillars that we support and we feel the part that we are supporting is a good contribution towards the education of students at MZUNI,” Mzungu said.

Mzungu added that; “we feel sports is a good aspect of a country in terms of development. We are mindful that in sports, it means competition and some certain disciplines and attitudes come from sports, so you will find that if sports is paid attention to, the academic side will also excel because the mind will be well blessed.”

In his remarks, MZUNI Vice Chancellor Wales Singini commended the bank for the sponsorship, which he said will go a long way to help enhance students’ experience on campus.

“As an institution, we are so excited. Through the trophy, we want to enhance our students’ experience on campus,” Singini said.

Singini added that; “this could be one way of making sure that we gain back our glory. Remember, we had MZUNI FC participating in the Super League. The starting point was talentsand skills from amongst our students. We lost that glory at some point.”

“According to a proposed fixture for all sports categories, the preliminary round of games will start during the weekend of 16 and 17 September followed by semi-finals on the 23rd, and final games will be played on 24 September.
