Police in Chikwawa have arrested eight people for allegedly setting fire to Chapananga Police Unit and stealing property belonging to police officers.

Chikwawa police spokesperson Dickson Matemba has confirmed the development in a statement.

The Police Unit was set ablaze on July 25 by irate community members seeking retribution for a murder suspect in custody.

The suspects have been identified as Yesaya Chipangula, David Andrea, Tafuleni Yonasi, Malita Ephraim, Ephraim Halmiton, Winnie Majonanga, Maria Kelias and Baziwel Matete.

They were apprehended during a joint operation conducted by Chikwawa Police and Mitole Police Mobile Service Officers over the weekend.

 “This brings the total number of suspects to ten, as two were previously arrested on the same day of the incident” said Matemba.

The suspects are expected to appear before court soon to answer charges of arson, malicious damage and theft.

All the suspects come from Traditional Authority Chapananga in the same district.

Meanwhile, investigations are still underway to apprehend additional individuals allegedly involved in the criminal act.
