First round grosses K531m – SULOM

Haiya: This is not a mean achievement

The first round of the 2023 TNM Super League has realised K531 million in gate revenue collection, Super League of Malawi – SULOM has revealed.

The amount is higher compared to K320 million which was realized last season during the same stage of the competition.

Speaking during a media briefing which was held at the SULOM offices in Blantyre over the weekend, the league’s president Fleetwood Haiya attributed the development to competitiveness and excitement of the game as well as strict gate management measures which have helped to prevent fraud.

“The 57 percent increase in revenue collection this year is not a mean achievement. To us, it means that the season is very competitive and we also believe that measures which we have put in place to maximize gate revenue are working.” Lauded Haiya.

Among others, SULOM has also managed to pay referees their first round money and the body is for the first time operating in offices with secretariat employed.

Meanwhile, the SULOM boss has also revealed that minus the positives recorded, the league has also faced some challenges in the first half.

The SULOM leadership has blamed slight fixture disparities during the period in the round on non-football related events especially the actions of ground owners.

He said; “the owners of these match venues book other social functions whenever we have assigned a game which has been contrary to our plea considering that we released the fixtures in advance to alert them when the games are going to be played.”

The top flight league boss is however optimistic that the trend will change in the second round.
