Working class people have a chance to gain knowledge in taxation following the introduction of a post graduate certificate course in taxation and customs at the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences – MUBAS.

This was revealed at a signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding between MUBAS and the Malawi Revenue Authority – MRA.

Among those targeted are MRA employees, clearing agents, entrepreneurs among others.

This comes as most employees at the tax regulating institution are showing lack of knowledge on taxation and customs despite having qualifications from other fields.

Speaking after the signing of the agreement, MUBAS vice chancellor Nancy Chitela stressed that despite having qualifications from other fields one needs to gain experience in issues of taxation and customs.

“Apart from the Bachelors Degree in Taxation that targets those with MSCE, we are also targeting those that are already employed by MRA but they do not have that certificate in taxation. We believe this will help in building capacity for many people who include, clearing agents as well as entrepreneurs.

On his part, Commissioner General for the MRA John Bizwick said; “the agreement will provide a platform where we can explore issues which we believe are beneficial to both parties as well as the country at large.

Knowledge helps one to give best services to clients hence the new approach we have taken.”

The program is expected to commence next year.
