Mutharika endorsed as DPP torchbearer
The opposition Democratic Progressive Party – DPP national governing council has endorsed Peter Mutharika as its 2025 elections candidate.
During its meeting in Mangochi yesterday, the former governing party’s politburo also resolved to push its elective convention dates forward from this month to next July.
Addressing the delegates, former President and party leader Mutharika said; “the postponement is aimed at giving the party ample time to adopt the resolutions made by the NGC.”
The party is this December expected to review and adopt the constitutional changes that have been made concerning the number of delegates to the convention.
Commenting on the development however, political and governance commentator George Phiri is of the view that the latest endorsement of Mutharika will not end the ongoing squabbles in the DPP.
On shifting convention to next year, Phiri said; “looking at how the DPP has been and what the party should do to prepare for the polls, I feel like it is too late to hold a convention next year because the party has a lot of issues to address before the general elections.”
