Urine spraying ESCOM customer convicted
The Lilongwe Third Grade Magistrate Court has convicted and sentenced 52-year-old Rodwell Amazon after a urine spraying incident at the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi(ESCOM) offices.
The court through state prosecutor Sub Inspector Maggie Kayaka heard that on Friday last week, the convict went to Escom Service Centre offices in Lilongwe where he insulted employees and caused alarm.
According to a statement that Capital FM has seen, upon arrival at the ESCOM offices, Amazon was greeted and asked to be assisted.
He however returned the kind gesture with an insult, asking why ESCOM was yet to connect his house to the grid seven years since he applied.
After the outburst, the convict opened a 5 litre container that was filled with urine.
He then emptied the foul-smelling contents of the customer service hall, a development which caused panic among employees and other clients.
In court, Amazon pleaded guilty to the charge of Conduct Likely to Cause Breach of Peace and apologized.
In her submission, Kayaka asked the court to slap the convict with a justifiable punishment.
Delivering her sentence, Third Grade Magistrate Bernadetta Kaluba, said that the convict should have explored other channels of addressing the matter.
She then went on to slap him with a fine of K30,000 or in default to serve a two-month prison sentence to serve as a deterrent to would-be offenders.
