Schools used as evacuation camps fumigated, as classes resume

The Ministry of Education has embarked on a fumigation exercise in schools that were affected by cyclone Freddy in the Sourthen Region.

This exercise is being done in collaboration with various stakeholders as a way of enhancing safety of learners .

According to the Ministry’s spokesperson Mphatsi Nkuonera, the Ministry is committed to making sure that learners are safe in schools which harbored displaced people.

” In very unique cases, where we still have internally displaced people-IDPs the arrangement still remains, that IPDs will leave the classes in the morning to pave way for teaching and learning to take place,” Nkuonera said.

The fumigation is to rid the classrooms of possible bug infestations such as bedbugs, lice and others harmful insects.

Meanwhile, lessons in the Northern and Central Region schools have commenced on Monday this week for the third term.

The Ministry has also issued a fresh warning against selling already cooked food in schools.

Before the disaster, the authorities issued a ban on the sale of already cooked food stuffs, as a preventative measure against cholera.

According to Nkuonera, they have sustained the ban to ensure that they contain the spread of diseases such as cholera.

“The ban still stands and therefore let us work hand in hand by making sure that we follow all cholera preventive measures” added Nkuonera.
