Marine team winds-up search and rescue mission in Mchinji

The military have finalised their search for missing persons after recovering nine bodies from a boat accident on Lusa River in Mchinji district.

The boat carrying unknown number of people capsized on Wednesday on the river, apparently due to overloading and five people were rescued.

Some communities said the boat carried 22 people to a funeral ceremony but other reports indicate that it had 14 passengers on board.

The Malawi Defence Force team from Monkey Bay marine department led the search and rescue efforts.

Julius Malivasi from the Marine forces says there is no hope of finding other bodies, hence their decision to close the search mission.

“The people that we were expected to find were 9, and because the number has reach to the expected number therefor I think we cannot find the other bodies,” said Malivasi.

Mchinji District Commissioner Fred Movete has since appealed to the authorities to consider addressing mobility challenges in some parts of the district.

Movete told the state controlled MBC that most roads are impassable in the area where the accident happened.
