Tea output at 48 million kgs – report
Tea production is projected to slightly increase this year to 48 million kilograms, a latest report shows.
According to figures from Tea Association of Malawi, this is 1 million kilograms more than the 2022 production of 47 million kilograms despite some notable emerging risks.
A preliminary report from the Tea Association of Malawi also quoted in Nico Asset Managers February economic report attributes the slight production jump to favourable weather conditions.
“The Industry faces challenges emanating from the rising costs of raw materials for production and the impact of climate change which is affecting the timing of the planting season,” reads the report in part.
Meanwhile, total tea production amounted to 6.4 million kilograms in January 2023, higher than 4.6 million kilograms produced in December 2022.
It is, however, being noted that in terms of sales, the volumes of tea sold decreased to 0.16 million kilograms from 0.18 million kilograms in the preceding month.
Similarly, the average price of tea dropped to 1dollar 03 cents per kilogram from 1dollar 31cents per kilogram registered in the preceding month.
Tea is one of the country’s main forex earners –ranking third in main exports from Tobacco and Sugar.
