Govt to replace national IDs lost during cyclone
A purposeful exercise is on the agenda to replace thousands of national identity cards that people lost during last month’s devastating Cyclone Freddy.
Three weeks after the tragedy, multitudes of displaced persons are still sheltering in evacuation camps and other temporary dwellings and many of them cannot access any services that require proof of national identity.
Leader of the Opposition in Parliament who is also Democratic Progressive Party – DPP legislator for Mulanje Central, Kondwani Nankhumwa, asked what steps Capital Hill is taking to rectify the issue.
“In the wake of Cyclone Freddy, hundreds of people lost their ID cards in the process. I want to know what is being done so that these people are assisted because many of them are failing to access some services.” Nankhumwa queried.
In his response, Homeland Security Minister Ken Zikhale Ng’oma gave an assurance on the matter.
“My ministry is now ready with NRB to go and start replacing those cards. We are working for the budget which has just been passed and soon we will be going to conduct the exercise.” He guaranteed.
