Cyclone Freddy: SULOM donates to survivors

As calls for support towards people affected by Cyclone Freddy get louder, the Super League of Malawi (SULOM) has taken heed of such calls with a K19 million worth donation.

SULOM has donated 500 bags of assorted relief items, which have been handed over to the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) in Blantyre on Sunday.

SULOM President Fleetwood Haiya said the money for the humanitarian assistance is a contribution made by all the 16 top flight league teams and other well-wishers.

Some of the well-wishers that have added weight to the support include Nyasa Manufacturing Company and Into Sports Limited.

While acknowledging the hurdles that local teams face, Haiya applauded them for will that has been displayed.

“We appreciate financial challenges which clubs are facing, but we thank them for the love they have shown to support our colleagues who have been affected by the cyclone,” the SULOM leader said.

Speaking after receiving the donation, DoDMA’s Deputy Director of Risk Reduction Fedson Chikuse commended the gesture by SULOM, describing it as timely.

“I would like to thank SULOM for assisting us. People are still living in over 500 camps and we hope this donation will help to alleviate challenges which they are facing.” Highlighted the deputy director.

Apart from clothes which were part of the donation, each of the 500 bags contains 20kgs maize flower, 2kgs Rice, 5kgs Likuni phala, 4kgs Sugar, 1kg salt, Soya pieces, 1 litre cooking oil, soap and body lotion.
