SRWB for quality despite Cyclone Freddy induced challenges

We are doing everything possible: Makwangwala

Southern Region Water Board – SRWB officials are disclosing that their engineers are working around the clock in repairing equipment that were damaged due to the impact of Cyclone Freddy in all water pumping points.

Just like other utility service providers, SRWB was badly affected by the cyclone which resulted into loss of water supply in many districts.

According to the institution’s public relations officer Ritta Makwangwala, repair works are currently underway while in other areas the board has opted to come up with alternative means of restoring water supply

“In Nsanje, Bangula, Chikwawa and Nchalo, our pipes were washed away while at Ngabu and Misewu Folo there were no power supply but supply is now normal,” she disclosed.

Makwangwala also added that; “in Phalombe where transmission lines to Ndangopuma Tank and Old Naisi extension were washed away, the board is pumping using generators resulting into normal water supply for the district hospital.”

She has however revealed that works are underway on the intake and distribution lines at Namadzi where the board’s offices were submerged and damaged while at the same time distribution lines were washed away.

She added that; “at Domasi the board is working on the intake and distribution lines which has resulted into limited water supply. However, at Zilondo and Kuchawe were using generators to pump water since we have an electricity power outage challenge.

But Makwangwala disclosed that its engineers are working on intake and water distribution lines in Phalombe thereby providing its customers in Migowi with partial water supply

Ten districts in the region have been badly hit by the cyclone which started from Mozambique.
