Old Mutual Donates K60m towards Cyclone Freddy response
Old Mutual Group Plc. has today donated K60 million to the Malawi Red Cross Society (MRCS) towards the Cyclone Freddy response.
According to Old Mutual Group Chief Finance Officer Vera Zulu, the financial support will go towards food, clothing, health and hygiene facilities.
Zulu says the donation represents not only the organisation’s commitment to supporting communities in times of crisis, but also deep appreciation for the incredible work that the Red Cross and it’s volunteers do.
“Through our donation, we hope to contribute to the important work being done by Red Cross Malawi, as they continue to provide rescue and emergency services like shelter, food, water and other critical supplies to those affected by the cyclone,” Zulu explained.
She also disclosed that through Old Mutual subsidiary, Mthunzi funeral services, they have opened up 50 percent of their mortuary space to support Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital which is overwhelmed with Cyclone fatalities.
On his part, MRCS communications and Resource Mobilisation Specialist Felix Washoni applauds Old Mutual for the support, saying Cyclone survivors are in dire need of basic amenities.
“We have some survivors who are yet receive emergency support therefore this donation comes timely to reach out to them. We promise to be accountable in all expenses,” says Washoni.
He explained that evacuation camps are still receiving more people as rescue and search effort continue across the southern region.
