Report recommends e-ticketing at match venues
An investigation report into gate revenue theft and fraud at football matches is touting e-ticketing as key to eliminating the vice.
Last June the Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) instituted a taskforce to probe the issue a few weeks, after six people were convicted and fined for stealing K400,000 during a Super League match.
It also coincided with the suspension of FCB Nyasa Big Bullets accountant, Jeremiah Mwagomba, for allegedly attempting to pocket K750, 000 in gate revenue at a league match against Mighty Tigers.
MNCS Chairperson, Sunduzwayo Madise, has confirmed adoption of the recommendations by the taskforce that was charged with generating a comprehensive strategy and framework to curb the malpractice.
“The taskforce gave us the report and we adopted it. We then gave the report to a specialised committee of finance and sports development so that they recommend what are immediate, medium and long term issues in the initial report.” Madise confirmed.
The MNCS board chairperson added that the biggest recommendation in the report is migrating to an electronic system.
“We are excited that SULOM contestants were all talking about introducing e-payment. We need to stop paying cash at the gate,” added Madise.
He also indicated that there are other things like making sure that there are turnstiles at the entrance, so that patrons of the game are counted.
During the 2022 TNM Super League prize presentation in Blantyre last month, SULOM and TNM plc officials announced that spectators will from this season be paying for league matches using TNM Mpamba debit card.
It was mentioned that all match venues will have Point of Sale (PoS) machines.
