Malawi Tourism Council lobbying for review of duty waiver threshold
Tourism players are lobbying for a review of current duty waiver threshold whose nature sidelines Small and Medium Enterprises-SMEs.
The Malawi Tourism Council observed that the waiver which applies in huge projects like construction of more than 50 room hotels, only benefits large corporates.
According to the council’s Executive Director Innocent Kaliati, the threshold bars upcoming enterprises –the actual category in need of such incentives and support.
The Council submitted this concern to the Finance Minister Sosten Gwengwe in form of pre-budget inputs.
Gwengwe earlier assured stakeholders that some of the inputs during pre-budget consultations will be considered in the budget.
He however, acknowledged expenditure pressures that are suppressing revenue base to make the budget a balanced one.
Today’s Budget statement will be a litmus test to see if Gwengwe and his team took heed of the plea.
