Chakwera in Doha for LDC summit
.Malawi to handover chairmanship
President Lazarus Chakwera is in Doha, Qatar where he will be attending the 5th United Nations Conference on Least Developed Countries (LDC5).
Chakwera who left this morning through Lilongwe’s Kamuzu International Airport, will attend the meeting in his capacity as global chairperson of the Coordinating Bureau of the Least Developed Countries.
The meeting is scheduled to run between 4 and 9 March but presidential executive assistant Sean Kampondeni reveals that Chakwera will return to Malawi on the 14th.
However there public question on why the president will only be returning to Malawi three days later.
The questions are coming in considering the government’s strained financial position and the growing need for justification of any spending of the taxpayer’s resources.
“The President is going to conclude his meetings on 11th and then on his way back he will fly to South Africa where he is going to catch his flight back to Malawi,” explained Kampondeni.
At the event, Chakwera will hand over the LDC chairmanship which the country assumed back in 2018.
Among others, the meeting in the Middle East nation will tackle issues on investing in people, structural transformation, mobilizing international support in LCDs as well as embracing science and technology in line with Sustainable Development Goals.
