Four arrested for possessing fake banknotes

Police in Lilongwe have arrested four people for alleged possession and use of fake Malawi kwacha and US dollar banknotes.
The suspects have been identified as 22-year-old David Nthakayawina, 30-year-old Mazunzo Wawande, 36-year-old James Umali, and Abdul Kaloti aged 64.
As Lilongwe police spokesperson Hastings Chigalu explains, at the time of arrest, Kaloti – who is an African doctor – was found with fake notes supposedly amounting to 1.3 million kwacha.

In addition Kaloti was also found with the sum of 7,479,000 kwacha, suspected to have been obtained through the said dubious means, changing the fake currency.
While the third suspect was found with 1.5 million kwacha bank notes.
The suspects will appear in court soon to answer cases of Found in Possession of forged bank notes, and using forged bank notes which contravene section 366 of the Penal Code, and section 54 of Reserve Bank Act of 2018, respectively.
Meanwhile, police are still hunting for a fifth suspect who is at large.
