Water authorities install Chlorine dispensers
Ministry of water and sanitation authorities have started installing chlorine dispensers in communal water points in some cholera hotspots areas.
The water points include taps and boreholes.
According to a statement signed by secretary for water and sanitation, Elias Chimulambe, the project is being implemented with assistance from Evidence Action, WASH NGO’s and other development partners.
Research conducted by water and sanitation officials has proven that using chlorine dispensers is very effective when it comes to fighting water borne diseases such as cholera.
Chimulambe has further explained that the move is to disinfect any harmful microbes which may have found their way into the water supply.
Disinfecting drinking water is touted as one of the important factors of combating the cholera outbreak, which has reached alarming levels.
Chimulambe has since advised the public to ensure that the dispensers are well protected and not vandalised once installed.
The public have also been implored to refrain from using water from unprotected sources from drinking and practice food hygiene in order to control the spread of the disease.
