MNCS lays foundation for Mzuzu half marathon

The Malawi National Council of Sports has unveiled the maiden 21-kilometer Mzuzu Half Marathon.

Slated for March 5, this year, the race will give athletes an opportunity to compete, develop and improve their skills as well as raise awareness of good health and well-being.

Furthermore, the event is expected to help promote the city of Mzuzu and act as a preparatory stage for the 42.195-kilometer Blantyre race.

The competition is open to both local and international male and female athletes from all age groups.

Winners in each category will go away with one million kwacha while runners up and third placed will receive seven hundred thousand and five hundred thousand kwacha respectively.

National Council of Sports Board Member and Chairperson of the Sports Development Committee Helen Mpinganjira Tasosa says they felt it’s high time they brought the marathon to Mzuzu.

On his part, Chairperson of the Mzuzu Half Marathon organizing committee Peter Mumba said they are prepared to successfully hold the race.

Meanwhile, MNCS Acting Executive Secretary Shephord Boma believes the competition will help unearth new talent.
