12 October, 2024

Six people have been arrested for allegedly inciting violence at Kamphata Trading Centre, along the Lilongwe-Dedza M1 road.

Earlier today, some disgruntled people from the area, mostly vendors detained a truck carrying Affordable Input Program (AIP) fertilizer destined for other areas within Traditional Authority Kalumbu’s area.

According to Lilongwe Police Spokesperson Hastings Chigalu, the people alleged that their area is receiving less fertilizer, compared to other places within the same area (constituency).

The people released the truck after intervention of the police and other stakeholders.

Chigalu further reports that the people went on to mobilized themselves and  started blocking the M1 road, burning tyres, pelting stones at passing vehicles, and demanding cash from motorists.

The Police again rushed to contain the situation and arrested the six suspects.

Meanwhile, calm has returned to the area and there is free flow of traffic on the road.

The suspects will be taken to court soon to answer a case of inciting violence and other criminal related charges.
