Malawi exports to Tanzania thrive
Malawi’s exports to neighboring Tanzania doubled in 2021 to register a rare positive trade balance of 15 billion kwacha.
The National Statistical Office –NSO’s 2022 Malawi in Figures report indicate booming bilateral trade amongst the neighboring countries since 2020.
For instance, Malawi’s imports from Tanzania were at 41 billion in 2021 from 30 billion kwacha while exports jumped further to 57 billion from 24.6 billion kwacha.
At 57 billion kwacha, Tanzania was the leading export destination in the SADC region seconded by South Africa –with total exports into the region at 17.8 billion kwacha.
Imports from SADC were at 668 billion kwacha in 2021 with South Africa and Zambia leading at 441 billion and 104.9 billion kwacha respectively.
Stakeholders say free flow of goods at Songwe border is enabling booming export of farm produce such as rice, groundnuts and soy beans to Tanzania.
