NAM told to consider teams’ financial constraints in national league structure

The Netball Association Malawi (NAM) is being challenged to structure the upcoming national netball league in a way that will not burden participating teams.

Former NAM President Khungikire Matiya has made the plea ahead of the launch.

The 40 million kwacha league is set for launch this Saturday 17th December at the Griffin Sayenda Sports Complex in Lilongwe.

She has cited the financial constraints that most teams are facing as a factor that has to be put into consideration.

“Netball is facing a lot of challenges in regard to sponsorship.  Most of the teams in our country have no sponsors and they rely on well-wishers which is not sustainable,” she said

Matiya added:“I am hoping NAM will take this into consideration otherwise if team are to be travelling to and from, it will pause a threat to the sustainability of this league.”

But in a statement, NAM President Abigail Shariff reveals that they are partnering with Salima Sugar Company Limited.

The association aims to achieve long term development and growth of the country’s netball through the initiative.

Matiya has welcomed the development saying it will also give an opportunity for the players to show case their talent which can one day land them deals in the top flight clubs locally and on the international scene.

She added that the Netball governing body has to set measures on financial spending that should help them improve transparency and accountability.

Meanwhile, the central region netball giants Blue Eagles netball team and MAFCO netball team will play at the launch.

Sports Minister Richard Chimwendo Banda is expected to grace the occasion.
