Malawi’s corruption fight questionable-Catholic bishops
Catholic bishops are questioning President Lazarus Chakwera’s leadership for feigning ignorance on the arrest of Martha Chizuma, the Anti-Corruption Bureau-ACB Director.
Chizuma was controversially arrested last week following a complaint from the then Director of Public Prosecution-DPP Steven Kayuni that she injured him in a leaked phone conversation.
This is in relation to the money laundering and corruption case involving a UK based businessman Zuneth Sattar over government contracts.
The ACB chief was taken to Namitete police station and released five hours later and all the charges levelled against her were dropped.
However, Chakwera was quick to point out that he was not aware of the warrant of arrest against Chizuma.
The president has since instituted a 12-team commission of inquiry on the incident led by Justice Edward Tweya.
In a statement, the bishops through the Episcopal Conference of Malawi-ECM say the fight against corruption is now questionable.
They have since challenged Chakwera and his administration to do due diligence and create a legacy in the fight against corruption.
