DPP reinstates Mzomera Ngwira as regional governor for the North
The Democratic Progressive Party-DPP has reinstated Christopher Mzomera Ngwira as the party’s regional governor for the northern region.
The DPP fired Ngwira from the position in 2020 after his conviction and a four year jail term over abuse of office.
The party then elected Ackim Mwanza on an acting capacity.
Ngwira abused his office in the use of Local Development Fund-LDF money meant for a teacher’s house project at Lukwelukwe primary school.
This happened in 2010 during his term as parliamentarian for Mzimba Hora.
The High Court in Mzuzu then reduced his sentence and released him in May this year after serving almost half of his 4-year jail term.
DPP Administrative Secretary Francis Mphepo says the party has recalled Ngwira, after reviewing the High Court judgement and considering his exceptional performance on the position.
But a political commentator George Phiri casts doubt that Ngwira will manage to rejuvenate the former governing party due to existing divisions.
