Police investigate counterfeit fertilizer production in Lilongwe
Police in Kanengo, Lilongwe are investigating reports of production and sale of alleged fake fertliser by some unscrupulous people.
It follows reports of the fake fertilizer being sold in some markets in the capital city since last month.
According to Kanengo Police spokesperson Gresham Ngwira, in November this year, they received a tip about the presence of fake fertiliser on the market especially at Mgona Market, Kanengo.
In the course of investigations, it was discovered that more than four people had been duped after buying the fake fertiliser packed in Export Trading Group branded bag.
“We are keeping 4 bags of fertilizer, weighing 50 kilograms each following reports,” Ngwira said.
While the outer coat looks exactly like real fertiliser, the rest of the contents are soil granules.
However, when contacted, ETG officials expressed ignorance on the matter, arguing that apart from their depots, they do not have agents selling their product.
The police have since condemned the malpractice and warned all those involved in the malpractice that they will be arrested.
Further, members of the general public have been advised to guard against unscrupulous individuals who sell counterfeit products including fertiliser.
