Outbreaks overwhelm Malawi-USAID Covid-19 response team

The Covid 19 Response Team under USAID’s Global Health Bureau is sympathizing with Malawi as her health systems have been overwhelmed with multiple outbreaks that have hit the country.

The Director of the Covid 19 Response Team under USAID’s Global Health Bureau Beth Tritter, sounded the concern on Friday in Kasungu district, when she visited health posts and villagers under Traditional Authority Njombwa to appreciate progress in the administration of the Covid 19 vaccine.

Currently the Malawi is hit hard by a Cholera outbreak which has affected almost of the districts in the country,

She has highlighed that despite registering tremendous progress in Covid 19 vaccine uptake, the coming in of Cholera and Polio outbreaks have affected the administration of the shots.

The other two outbreaks have also brought with them the need for Malawians to get other vaccines the cholera one for all ages and the wild polio virus one for children under 5 years.

Director of Health and Social Services for Kasungu district Emmanuel Golombe said they are now registering overwhelming response to Covid-19 vaccine in the communities.

Golombe has attributed the increase in the vaccine uptake to sensitization campaigns that were conducted, which have helped address myths and misconceptions that were associated with the vaccines.

Meanwhile the United States government has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Malawi in containing the outbreaks through initiatives that will enhance  awareness on the significance of vaccinations.
