More needs to be done in girl child protection –government

The Ministry of Gender Children and Social Welfare is admitting that it is not doing enough in protecting a girl child owing to the continued rise in teen pregnancies, early marriages and defilement cases in the country.

The sentiments were made on Thursday during the commemorations of the International Day of a Girl Child  in Mchinji.

Director of Child Affairs in the Ministry McKnight Kalanda discloses that  over 40% of girls are forced into early marriages by their parents and guardians due to poverty.

Kalanda encourages the community to continue putting efforts in ensuring that girls remain in school.

Advocacy and Communications Officer for Rays of Hope Andrew Mihawa, believes the challenges facing the girl child can be best addressed through close coordination between the Government, community leaders and non-governmental organisations.
