ECM frown at Tonse Administration’s institutional failure
Catholic Bishops have expressed discontent with government’s lack of action on recommendations made in their previous Pastoral letter.
In a Pastoral Statement released on Monday, the Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) has pointed out a number of areas which are showing no signs of improvement.
Titled “A call to hearken to the cry of poor Malawians”, the statement cites a lack of consistency in the austerity measures, government’s silence on the Affordable Inputs Program(AIP), the Tonse Alliance’s retrogressive governance as well as institutional failure.
Most importantly the Bishops have questioned the current administration’s way of fighting corruption and why the vice is continuing to grow against the Tonse’s campaign promises.
The ECM has therefore recommended the need for government to devise safety nets for the poor populous amid the current economic shocks, while it works on fairly implementing the AIP towards food security.
The Bishops have also underscored the need for the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) to implement the austerity measures that they put in place.
