Lilongwe Wildlife Trust calls for funding towards rescued Pangolin’s care
A stakeholder in the wildlife sector is appealing for support towards care of rescued Pangolins.
The Lilongwe Wildlife Trust is expressing concern that Pangolins continue to be the most trafficked animal in the world, making them a highly endangered species.
In a tweet the wildlife organisation has disclosed it is raising funds to be used in taking care of Pangolins that were rescued from traffickers.
The organisation is trying to raise K3.5 million (£3,000) to ensure sustainability of the process of caring for the little scaly mammals that have survived trafficking.
Most of the rescued Pangolins tend to have injuries that need medical attention and others are infants that require continued supervision as they are either taken from their mothers while still lactating or orphaned by other traffickers.
Over a million pangolins have been lost to trafficking over the past decade for their scales.
In recent years Malawi has seen a rise in convictions of persons involved in trafficking Pangolins, owing to an improvement in wildlife crime law enforcement.
