Malawian palliative care efforts commended
Ireland is commending local stakeholders’ efforts towards provision of palliative care services to hundreds of patients across Malawi.
Ireland’s envoy to Malawi, Sèamus ÒGrady, expressed the appreciation at the close of a five-week palliative care initiators course conducted by Ndi Moyo Palliative Care, a Salima-based non-governmental organisation.
ÒGrady noted that Malawi does not have enough palliative care providers and that such trainings would enhance services provision by filling the existing gap.
The envoy expressed optimism that swelling numbers of palliative care service providers would translate in enhanced access to better care by many chronic patients in local communities.
ÒGrady then pledged his country’s continued support towards such initiatives and asked the graduating palliative care initiators to fully utilise the knowledge gained.
On his part, Ndi Moyo Palliative Care’s Country Director, Bisani Mphongolo, announced the attainment of a great milestone of training 104 health workers since 2015.
He has since indicated plans to conduct more trainings online so as to reach more potential caregivers while addressing the prevailing issue of limited by space.
