Disregard for traffic regulations fueling road carnage

Transport authorities are expressing worry over what they term as continued disregard for road rules and regulations by users such as pedestrians and motorists which is resulting into accidents.
This follows the recent death of at least 13 people with several others suffering various degrees of injury in a traffic accident involving a lorry at Kamuzu View near Madziabango on the Blantyre-Chikwawa road last Sunday.
This is the latest in a spate of road accidents that have now cost nearly 30 lives and injured scores more across the country in the last couple of weeks.
Confirming the latest incident, Blantyre police deputy spokesperson Aubrey Singanyama disclosed that 10 survivors were rushed to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital for treatment.
According to Singanyama, initial investigations suggest that the accident happened after the lorry’s driver failed to control it due to excessive speeding while descending the Chikwawa escarpments.
Transport Minister Jacob Hara has told Capital FM that government will not relent sensitizing the citizenry on best road practices, so as to contain these accidents.
Meanwhile, a road safety specialist Chifwede Hara who is former director at the National Road Safety Council, is calling on commuter transport operators to get special defensive driving training as a measure to curbing road accidents.
