MERA restricts fuel purchases in containers

The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) has revoked a waiver on procurement of fuel in jerry cans up to 20 litres.
The revocation comes at a time some parts of the country especially in the central region are experiencing dry pumps, and a shortage that is affecting business operations.
In a statement, the MERA management discloses that they have revoked the waiver as some people are abusing ad taking advantage of the same.
Some motorists and vendors have been mass procuring the scarce fuel in multiple jerry cans for hording purposes.
MERA officials further indicate that those intending to purchase fuel in such containers will now be required to produce a valid fuel bulk purchase permit.
The authority has since indicated that it has put in place monitoring measures and will penalise those in contravention of the regulation.
