Official By-Elections results out this afternoon

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) is expected to announce official results of the August 23 Local Government By-Elections this afternoon.
MEC held the by-elections in three wards namely Shire in Balaka, Lupembe in Karonga and Wenya in Chitipa following the death of the sitting councilors in the wards last year.
“The Commission will make official announcement of results for the 23 August by-elections at 1:00PM today at the Main Tally Centre at Katoto Secondary School in Mzuzu”, says MEC Spokesperson Sangwani Mwafulirwa.
Unofficial results in yesterday’s elections show that Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has secured Lupembe and Wenya seats while United Democratic Front (UDF) has secured the Shire ward seat.
Wenya ward, MCP candidate Ronald Kayira, MCP’s Elisha Winga of Karonga’s Lupembe ward and Dickson Jackson Wasili of UDF in Shire Ward, are poised for victory in the three contested areas.
Mwafulirwa has told Capital FM that MEC is currently reviewing null and void votes as well as complaints lodged before the official announcement of the results.
