UDF raises eyebrows over electricity tariff hike proposal
The opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) is describing as unrealistic demands by ESCOM and Power Market Limited to raise electricity tariffs by 99 %.
On Monday, the two institutions wrote the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) asking for permission to effect the increase.
Spread over a four-year period beginning this October and 2026, the proposed hike could ultimately see consumers paying 207 kwacha per kilowatt; up from the current 104 kwacha per kilowatt hour.
However, MERA insists the tariff adjustment cannot be implemented before a public hearing is conducted to justify the same.
Meanwhile, UDF Spokesperson Yusuf Mwawa has tipped the authorities to strive on ensuring that all parts of the country have electricity.
