Six people have died after being swept away with floods in Chikwawa district.
This follows heavy rains that continue pouring in the district and most parts of the southern region.
Two of the casualties, who are a family, were swept away while attempting to cross the flooding Livunzu River on Wednesday.
The victims also include a health worker at Maperera health centre who drowned in Nkhathe River in the East bank area.
In a statement, Chikwawa Police Publicist Foster Benjamin indicates that most of the victims died of drowning in flooding rivers while one died after a house collapsed.
Benjamin is therefore advising communities not to cross flooding rivers in order to protect lives during this rainy season.
Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department attributes the prevailing extreme weather to a deep low pressure area developed in Mozambique.
