The Police in Phalombe are keeping in custody a 20-year-old herbalist on allegations that he raped a 16 year old girl.
About seven cases of rape and defilement have been registered this year alone in the district.
According to a statement signed by Phalombe Police Public Relations Officer Innocent Moses, the man Dyton Amos allegedly committed the offence last month at Mumbo village in the area of Traditional Authority Kaduya in the district.
At around nine in the evening of the material day, the suspect is said to have lied to the girl’s parents convincing them that he had traditional medicine that would cure her of the ailment she was suffering from.
The parents allowed him to take the girl not knowing that he was taking her to a graveyard where he later raped the her.
After she had narrated her ordeal to her parents, concerned members of the community took it upon themselves by finding the suspect and bringing him before Migowi Police Unit.
A medical report issued at Migowi Health Centre proved that the girl had indeed been raped.
Dyton Amos has since been charged with rape contrary to Section 133 of the Penal Code.
This case comes days after a 16-year-old girl was allegedly gang raped in Chikwawa district.
This has raised concerns over the increasing cases of rape and defilement in the country.
