The Police in Mchinji have charged a man for attempting to take his own life while in their custody.

The suspect Dickson Mandala was arrested last month for allegedly stealing cattle in the district.

Mchinji police publicist Kaitano Lubrino has confirmed the development to Capital FM.

Upon being found with a case to answer on 15 November 2018 by the second grade magistrate court, the suspect is reported to have entered a police cell with a razor blade.

During the night he cut himself with a razor blade and then broke it into pieces with the aim of swallowing them.

An inmate however saw what was happening and alerted the officers that were on duty that night.

He was then taken to Mchinji District Hospital where he was treated as an outpatient.

The Police have instituted investigations where the suspect will answer charges of attempting suicide once inquiries have been completed.

Meanwhile, the Malawi Police Service appeals to the public to seek assistance when they are facing challenges.
