American internet entertainment service provider Netflix has acquired rights to for the film adaptation of William Kamkwamba’s The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind. This is according to Variety.com
This will be the first Malawian movie to be beamed on the site
Kamkwamba’s book, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind was released in 2009.
The autobiography centers on his childhood and how he made electricity for his village using a windmill that he built on his own.
The movie adaption of the book, directed by Oscar nominated Chiwetel Ejiofor will be available for streaming on Netflix once launched in 2019.
Though it will also show in cinemas in the U.S. and U.K, it is still unclear if the movie will also be screened in Malawi.
Apart from directing the movie, Ejiofor who is well known for his role in 12 Years a Slave, also penned the film’s script.
In the movie, he plays the role of Trywell Kamkwamba, William’s father while Maxwell Simba plays the role of 13-year-old William.
The news that Netflix has acquired rights for the movie has received a lot of praise from Malawians online with many describing it as the best way to showcase Malawian talent to the rest of the world.
