ESCOM
loses millions of kwacha to vandals.
The country's
power utility body the Electricity Supply Corporation
of Malawi ESCOM says it was failing to reach out
to more people due to vandals who have destroyed
its property which is said to be costing the company
millions of kwacha.
ESCOM's deputy regional manager
for the centre David Moses Mbewe spoke in reaction
to reports that some people have spent more than
three years without being connected to electricity
despite applying for the services.
He said about 10 transformers
are vandalized each month adding that the parastatal
spends about 15 million kwacha on maintenance.
The deputy regional manager said
this has led into the company's failure to have
enough resources to reach out to more people.
Meanwhile Mbewe has disclosed
that plans were underway for the company to be
using new technology known as Single Wire Earth
Return Sewer which is said to be cheaper.
