Malawi’s Top Football League Kicks Off

Written by  Written by MarcFarlane MBEWE in the commercial city, Blantyre May 09, 2017

It was a weekend filled with overflowing tears, echoing jeers and resounding cheers in the opening week of the 2017 TNM Super League, Malawi’s elite.

Certainly, it shall always be a weekend to forget for record holders Nyasa Big Bullets who travelled back without a point to the commercial city, Blantyre, in the south, from the northern region.

The Bullets were beaten by Mzuzu’s Moyale Barracks on Sunday afternoon after being shockingly forced to a goalless draw on the league’s opening day by rookies, Chitipa United of Chitipa district.

Defending champions, Kamuzu Barracks had a fair share of the jeers as they lost against visitors BE FORWARD Wanderers of Blantyre in the league’s official opening match at the Bingu Nation Stadium in the capital, Lilongwe.

Lilongwe based Silver Strikers are yet to get back on their feet as they drew in all their away matches played in the southern region.

Zomba’s Red Lions were the biggest scores with fours to their credit making them leaders of the top flight league as it enters week two.

The Lions’ Innocent Bokosi has hit the ground running as he scored a hat trick making him the league’s top scorer. 11 goals were scored in nine matches that included three draws.

Returnees, Blantyre United were the biggest losers as eight matches did not go past a single score line. Debutants Masters Security faced their first defeat.
