Nurses In Malawi To Celebrate International Nurses Day

Written by  May 10, 2017

Nurses in the country are reflecting on ways to better their profession, ahead of the International Nurses Day commemorations later this week.

Activities for the day will be held in the northern region district of Nkhotakota.

This will be under the theme, “Nurses: a Voice to Lead- Achieving Sustainable Development Goals”.

This year’s theme aims to raise awareness both among the nursing profession, the citizenry and policy makers on what the Sustainable Development Goals are and why they matter.

The United Nations set May 12 aside to pay tribute to all nurses who save lives and care for patients.

The day also gives people a chance to reflect on the progress made in the profession, challenges and the way forward.

According to a statement by the National Organisation of Nurses and Midwives of Malawi (NONM), nurses and midwives are striving to execute their duties well, despite the challenges that they face.

Some of them being insufficient funding by government to the health sector, lack of resources in hospitals and low monthly wages.

NONM, founded in 1979, is an independent, non-partisan, non-governmental union and professional organisation representing nurses and midwives; the healthcare service and the Malawi society.

Its vision is to have a strong, vibrant, and visionary organisation that will result in a motivated and empowered nurse/midwife.

Its mission is to promote and maintain members’ professional interests and socioeconomic welfare to effectively contribute to quality healthcare services rendered to the nation.
