Lack of disability policy says FEDOMA

FEDOMA says lack of a disability policy is putting lives of people with disabilities in danger.
Lack of a disability policy in the country is putting lives of people with disabilities in danger.
This is according to officials of the Federation of Disability Organizations in Malawi-FEDOMA.
A Draft National Disability Policy was written in 2002, but it is awaiting government’s approval.
If passed, it is expected that it will play a vital role in offering the necessary guidelines to the Ministry of Persons with Disabilities, as it strives to carry out its mandate.
Speaking to capital fm, FEDOMA public relations officer Pamela Juma observed that people with disabilities are facing many challenges like failing to access health services, education and Agriculture, because there is no policy in place to ensure they are getting such facilities equitably.
Juma said despite the drafting of the bill, nothing much has been done up to date.
Meanwhile, people with disabilities are benefiting from the government initiated National Policy on Equalization of Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities.
This policy promotes the rights of people with disabilities and their integration in society in order for them to play a full and participatory role in the social-economic development of the country.
