The Immigration department is failing to accommodate newly appointed officers due to housing challenges, Chief Immigration Officer, Hudson Mankhwala said on Thursday.
President Joyce Banda appointed Mankhwala two weeks ago, replacing Elvis Thodi who served on the position during the Bingu wa Mutharika administration.
President Banda also appointed new chief passport officer, chief permit officer and chief citizenship officer.
Speaking to the Malawi News Agency, Mankhwala said the appointments will improve their operations but the challenge is housing the new officers who are supposed to take up their positions immediately.
He therefore asked the home affairs authorities to engage the Ministry of Lands and housing for consideration on additional houses to accommodate the officers.
Currently, the department is in the process of recruiting 300 officers to beef up its personnel.
